Who issues the certificate
The certificate comes from the host, not from the site where you found the event. Hosts decide whether every registrant gets one, whether only teams that submit get one, and whether winners and finalists get a separate merit certificate.
Tensor Hack does not issue certificates. It links each listing to its source page, where the host's rules on certificates, if any, are published.
Participation vs merit
A participation certificate says you took part. Many hosts only issue it to teams that make a valid submission, so registering and disappearing usually gets you nothing.
A merit or winner certificate names a placement or prize. It carries more weight because a judge picked your work. If an event advertises certificates prominently but says little about judging or prizes, treat the certificate as the whole reward.
How to make sure you get one
Read the rules for the words certificate, eligibility and submission before you register. Use the same name and email the host will print and send to. Submit something complete before the deadline, even if it is small.
Certificates often arrive days or weeks after results. Save the host's announcement and your submission link so you can follow up if yours does not arrive.
What a certificate is worth on a resume
On its own, a participation certificate is a weak signal. What recruiters can check is the project: a repo, a hosted demo, a project page or a short video. List the hackathon with what you built and your role, and link the work.
A placement is worth stating plainly with the event name and year. Keep the certificate file in case an employer or college asks for proof.
Paid certificates
Be careful with events that charge a fee mainly to issue a certificate. A fee is not automatically a red flag, but it should buy something you can name: venue, food, mentoring or a real prize pool. If the certificate is the only thing you get for the fee, skip it.
FAQ
Do all hackathons give certificates?
No. The host decides. Many give participation certificates to teams that submit and merit certificates to winners, but some give none. Check the rules on the event's source page.
How do I get a hackathon certificate?
Register with the name and email you want on the certificate, meet the host's eligibility rules and make a valid submission before the deadline. Certificates usually arrive after results are announced.
Are hackathon certificates useful for jobs?
A participation certificate alone is a weak signal. The project you built, with a link to the code or demo, matters more. A winner or finalist placement is worth listing with the event name and year.
